  5. I've written 8 exams in March, that's why this update took such a long time.
  6. Sorry for the delay and thanks for waiting ;-)

  8.  1.37   Changes/Additions since 1.36:
  9.     - Added new viruses: Happy New Year 97 and CygnusEd 4.0 Fake. Thanks
  10.       to Jan Andersen for sending them.
  11.     - Added new viruses: Akimo and WECH. Thanks to Markus Schmall for
  12.       sending them.
  13.     - Added additional filter mechanism to the device detection code
  14.       to avoid problems with CD-ROM drives. These should not appear
  15.       any longer in the bootblock lab. Thanks to Jan Andersen for the
  16.       report about his drive.
  17.     - Rewritten file check code to check data files for viruses too.
  18.       There appeared a macro virus called 'SexGuide' which I've added.

  22. Actually,  version  1.36 should become the XMAS '96 release, but as I had so
  23. many  other  things  to do, this is the first version in 1997.  Another year
  24. has  gone  by  and  I'd  like to thank all folks out there that supported me
  25. through  the  last year(s) with new stuff and money.  At this place I'd also
  26. like  to  thank  Jan  Andersen  and  his  family  for sending that nice Xmas
  27. postcard.   I wish all of you out there the very best for this new year 1997
  28. and  I wish all you virus-coders out there the worst nightmares ever dreamed
  29. by any human being!!

  31.  1.36   Changes/Additions since 1.35:
  32.     - Added new viruses: HD Protect 6.24, COP 15, Trust No-One 1-3.
  33.       Thanks to Jan Hendrik Lots for sending those beasts.
  34.     - Finally implemented the bootblock brain!!! After 3 years of
  35.       laziness in this point I managed to code all the necessary stuff
  36.       to get the brain working. Now VirusZ can learn all your custom
  37.       bootblocks and will no longer report them as unknown.
  38.       See details in the guide at the 'Misc Prefs' chapter and in the
  39.       'Bootblock Lab' section. All formerly disabled buttons are now
  40.       fully working.
  41.     - New distribution site: 'The Realm' is dead, from now on call the
  42.       'Army Shop'. Don't panic, same number, same sysop ;-)
  43.     - Added sort mechanism to brain editor and fixed problems with
  44.       delete function.
  45.     - Added new device detection code that finds all usable devices
  46.       itself and therefore removed 'Devices' from 'Misc Prefs'. Now all
  47.       mounted sector-based drives will be scanned automatically.
  48.       I've tested this routine with SCSI/IDE HDs, SyQuest and CD-ROM
  49.       and it worked fine. Please let me know if it doesn't work properly
  50.       on your system.
  51.     - Added menu item 'Update Devices' to refresh the device list after
  52.       mounting some new drives (eg. SyQuest, CD-ROM etc.).
  53.     - Added two new options to the Background prefs: 'Check All Drives
  54.       On Update' and 'Report Known Bootblocks'. The first option makes
  55.       VirusZ rescan all disks after 'Update Devices', the second option
  56.       enables the report of bootblocks included in the brain by the
  57.       background check.
  58.     - Added possibility to go to Vector Check and Boot Lab directly from
  59.       the background checker if something unusual has been detected.
  60.       This feature was already implemented a few years ago but has been
  61.       removed after rewriting the background code. So now I hope that
  62.       all you folks demanding it from time to time are happy again ;-)
  63.       Note that this only works if VirusZ isn't active in any other way
  64.       at that moment (e.g. File Check).

  66.  1.35   Changes/Additions since 1.34:
  67.     - Added new topic to vector check: 'Suspicious Process Fields'.
  68.       The tc_Switch, tc_Launch and pr_PktWait fields of every process
  69.       are listed here. These fields are used by some new viruses and
  70.       they are likely to be used by future viruses too.
  71.     - Added 'Show Process Fields' to vector check prefs. This button
  72.       switches the function mentioned above.
  73.     - Added 'Process Fields' to 'Clear' menu in the vector check to
  74.       reset the above mentioned pointers.
  75.     - Added process field check to the background checker.
  76.     - Added 'Process Fields' buttons to the background prefs. Here you
  77.       can turn on/off startup check/surveillance of the process fields.
  78.     - Added new viruses: TRSI-ZNT.exe Fake, Firedom 1.4, HNY Clones.
  79.       Thanks to Markus Schmall and Jan Hendrik Lots for sending these

  81.     - Added Prometheus linkvirus. Thanks again to Markus Schmall.

  87.     The time has come to go back to the 'Fachhochschule' again, now for
  88.     about nine months until July 1997. This means that I will only work
  89.     on VirusZ at the week-ends which is far too less for astonishing
  90.     improvements. Therefore I will mainly do some new-virus-implemented
  91.     updates. Nevertheless VirusZ development will be continued...

  94.  1.34   Changes/Additions since 1.33:
  95.     - Added new viruses: ADO! + Installer + Library, Gotcha! II, ORB 95,
  96.       VoxelSvind Trojan and AGA Italy Fake. Thanks to Jan Andersen and
  97.       Jan Hendrik Lots for sending those beasts.
  98.     - Added BEOL 96 virus, the most clever bastard ever seen on Amiga
  99.       so far. It took a lot of analysing work to find a cure against
  100.       this sucker. Thanks to Jan Hendrik Lots for sending it and Markus
  101.       Schmall for some more example files.
  102.     - Added B.E.O.L. 2 and Affe linkviruses. Thanks to Markus Schmall
  103.       for sending them.
  104.     - Added XCom linkvirus. Thanks to Markus Lück for sending it.

  107.     Jan Andersen reported that the archive check crashes on his A500.
  108.     I myself then tested VirusZ on a plain 68000 and on Kickstart 2.0,
  109.     but it worked well. If someone has similar problems on his machine,
  110.     please tell me and send me the archive that crashed for testing...

  113.  1.33   Changes/Additions since 1.32:
  114.     - Added archivers preferences! Here you can easily enter the names,
  115.       recognition offsets/data and command lines of any file based
  116.       archiver programs (eg. LhA, LZX) you want VirusZ to recognize and
  117.       extract.
  118.     - If preferences have been changed during a session, VirusZ now
  119.       tells you if any of them have not been saved yet before exiting.
  120.       This is especially useful as the new archivers preferences might
  121.       be a lot of typing stuff which is annoying to lose.
  122.     - Added 'EF67A3C3' linkvirus (temporary name until something better
  123.       comes to my mind). Thanks to Christoph Faßbach for sending me this
  124.       little beast.
  125.     - Fixed wrong recognition for Lisa FuckUp 2.0. Sorry folks, but all
  126.       those RexxMasher compiled files have been recognized as a virus.
  127.       Thanks to Bert Jahn for sending the RmS package and the report.
  128.       And sorry to Matthias Scheler (AmiNet Administration) for all the
  129.       trouble.
  130.     - Added 'Extract Archives' toggle to the file check preferences to
  131.       switch on/off the new feature.
  132.     - Finally added recognition/extract code to the file check itself.
  133.       The rewritten file loader now also handles data files much better
  134.       if 'Decrunch Data Files' is activated. Only crunched data files
  135.       will be read completely, all others will just be read partially
  136.       for recognition purposes.
  137.     - Added more informative statistics at the end of each file check.
  138.     - Added new options to CHECKFILE and CHECKDIR ARexx commands:
  139.       a. USEEXTERN enables use of external xfd slaves.
  140.       b. EXTRACT turns on extracting of archives.
  141.     - Added USEEXTERN and EXTRACT options to Shell template. Meanings
  142.       are the same as with the ARexx commands.
  143.     - Added HitchHiker 3.00 + Installer. This is the 50th linkvirus
  144.       recognized by VirusZ!!! Special thanks to Markus Schmall for
  145.       sending this 'anniversary gift'.
  146.     - Fixed bug in HitchHiker 2.01 repair code. Some branches haven't
  147.       been removed properly in the last version. Thanks to Emmanuel
  148.       Poirier for this report.
  149.     - Added new version of xfdmaster.library.

  152.     The new features of this version have been heavily debugged and
  153.     I already fixed 3 major bugs in the beta versions, so this final
  154.     release should be stable and work properly. If there nevertheless

  158.  1.32   Changes/Additions since 1.31:
  159.     - Added recog/repair code for Hitch-Hiker 2.01 linkvirus. Thanks

  169.  1.31   Changes/Additions since 1.30:
  170.     - Enhanced basic file check routines. Added better test routines
  171.       for truncated files, added support for reloc32_short hunks in the
  172.       linkvirus removal code, added better CPU cache controlling code.
  173.       I hope that every abnormal condition is under control now ;-)
  174.     - Added analyzer for raw bootblock data files to file check. Now
  175.       you can scan your bootblock directories and get a report of all
  176.       bootblock viruses.
  177.     - Fixed severe problems in the file check: If a file was infected
  178.       with a linkvirus and underneath there was a 4eb9-linked file,
  179.       the 'Delete file' requester didn't pop up. The same problem
  180.       appeared when a linkvirus couldn't be removed properly.
  181.     - Fixed some bootblock recognitions. It sometimes happened that
  182.       clones were reported with the wrong name.
  183.  
  184.     All the above improvements are mainly based on the test results of
  185.     the Virus Test Center of the University of Hamburg. Thanks to Sönke
  186.     Freitag and the other members of VTC for this 'blow on the head' ;-)
  187.     I will fight to get back on the top ranking in your test sheet...

  189.     - Fixed repair code for Invader linkvirus. Some files might have
  190.       been defect after repair with the old code.
  191.     - Added new viruses: AMOS AGA-Install, CompuPhagozyte 10/11/12,
  192.       Circle of Power 12/13/14, VirusConstructionSet 2, LZX Reg Fake,
  193.       Creator, Degrad, Andy/Decade, Susi Drive Stepper, Biomechanic 7,
  194.       Wireface 3/4, Fileghost 1, Strange Atmosphere + 3 Installers.
  195.       Thanks to Markus Schmall and Jan Andersen for reacting so quickly
  196.       on the poor results in the VTC test and providing me with those
  197.       missing viruses.
  198.     - Added new feature to file check: It now automatically removes any
  199.       hunk_name ($3e8) found in a file. This is especially useful as
  200.       there appeared several disguised trojans through the last months
  201.       that used hunk_name to avoid proper file checks. I changed some
  202.       recognitions too: Wireface Trojans, COP 8 and UA Dialer 6.2 will
  203.       be analyzed completely and reported with their real names now.
  204.     - Added Amixhack trojan. Thanks to Dave Jones for that bastard.
  205.     - Added viruses: UnLZX Trojan, PowerTrader Fake, The BBS Traveller,
  206.       Hitch-Hiker 1.10 and Mutation Nation 1.0. Thanks again to Markus
  207.       Schmall for supplying me with these viruses.
  208.     - Fixed Enforcer hit in the B.E.O.L. memory check code. Thanks to
  209.       Christoph Dietz for the report.

  211.     ! IMPORTANT: I will no longer add new patches as I may develop   !
  212.     ! a totally new vector check for VirusZ that will be intelligent !
  213.     ! enough to learn changes done to the vectors. So please don't   !

  216.     And finally sorry for this relatively long delay, but it's going
  217.     to be summer and I need some fresh air from time to time ;-)

  219.  1.30   Changes/Additions since 1.29:
  220.     - Added some old bootblock viruses: Ass Protector French, Cracker
  221.       Exterminator, Disk Furunkel, Lamer Ext. Decoded, Laureline Female,
  222.       Sinister Syndicate 1+2. Some of these aren't really viruses, but
  223.       most other virus checkers detect them, so I added them too.
  224.       Thanks to Jan Andersen for sending that stuff.
  225.     - Fixed bug in preferences load routine. This code crashed on plain
  226.       68000 machines because of odd stack addresses. Thanks again to
  227.       Jan and to Phillip Feigh for the report.
  228.     - Fixed bug in the 'Happy New Year 96' repair code. The old routine
  229.       missed to check for one possible branch location and therefore
  230.       produced some crashing files from time to time. Thanks to Holger
  231.       Wessling and Jan-Tore Eliassen for reporting that bug and sorry
  232.       for all the trouble you had with the defect files.
  233.     - Added patches: CacheIt, ModePro, NewIcons, Prop3D and UrouHack.
  234.       Thanks to Dave Jones for collecting and sending that stuff.
  235.     - Added new version of xfdmaster.library.
  236.     - Added decrunch support to the FD file loader in the vector check.
  237.       Now you can crunch your FD files with any data cruncher supported
  238.       by xfdmaster.library. Thanks to Dave Jones for the nice idea.
  239.     - VirusZ now requires xfdmaster.library already at startup, ie. you
  240.       MUST install it in your LIBS: drawer. The reason is simple: Until
  241.       v1.29, I added several xfd-routines directly to VirusZ to avoid
  242.       loading xfdmaster.library, but this seems to be very uneffective
  243.       as most people use the decrunch feature anyway. There is a nice
  244.       side effect too: VirusZ has been shortened by about 2500 bytes.
  245.     - Added patches: LowFrag and UrouHack 1.3. Thanks to Bert Jahn for
  246.       sending that stuff.
  247.     - Saved about 1600 bytes by removing double strings (mostly virus
  248.       names) and optimized some memory recognition code.
  249.  
  250.  1.29   Changes/Additions since 1.28:
  251.     - Added xfdPatch to the vector check.
  252.     - Added recognition for LZX archives to the file check. Thanks to
  253.       Holger Wessling for the hint.
  254.     - Added MCP and PatchControl 2.2 to the vector check. Thanks to
  255.       Stefan Sommerfeld for sending the latest versions and for the
  256.       extra information.
  257.     - Added option 'Use External Slaves' to the file check preferences.
  258.       This is a new feature of xfdmaster.library v37 to filter out
  259.       external slaves that cause trouble all the time.
  260.     - Added KUK Crew and LZX 1.2 Fake trojans and Invader linkvirus.
  261.       Thanks to Markus Schmall for sending them.
  262.     - Modified and expanded the background preferences. The buttons for
  263.       'Bootblocks', 'Disk-Validators' and 'Known Viruses' exist twice
  264.       now as all the other buttons too. The 'Check Disks On Startup'
  265.       has been removed and replaced by the above mentioned. Now you can
  266.       switch on/off the bootblock and disk-validator check separately,
  267.       the check for known viruses can be switched off at startup too.
  268.       Please control your settings when you start the new version for
  269.       the first time.
  270.     - Rearranged some vector check code for better performance and
  271.       finally added all patches caused by SetPatch 40.16. Thanks to
  272.       Lars Kristensen for reporting about the SetPatch problems on
  273.       his machine.
  274.     - Redesigned file check preferences for better readability.
  275.     - Added changes done by 68040.library to vector check. If there
  276.       are still some vectors reported, please send me a note because
  277.       I couldn't test the recognition myself. No 68040 :-(

  279.  1.28   Changes/Additions since 1.27:
  280.     - Finally fixed a problem that I already noticed some months ago,
  281.       but didn't find the bug. After inserting and removing some disks,
  282.       it may have happened that the system had a busy-loop whenever the
  283.       background checker was working. Now I found the problem that
  284.       caused all the trouble: the BEOL memory checker tried to read
  285.       from a non-existing process in not available memory areas.
  286.     - Added a big new feature: a real background checker that not only
  287.       searches for known viruses but recognizes all changes done to
  288.       any system vectors. You can configure it totally to your needs.
  289.       All checks can be enabled/disabled separately for startup and
  290.       for surveillance.
  291.     - Added new security check to the memory checker: before testing
  292.       for known viruses, the respective address is tested to be in
  293.       available memory areas. This prevents busy-loops with RAD: or
  294.       other residents located near the bounds of a memory area.
  295.     - Added MagicCX 2.39 to the vector check. Thanks to Martin Hans
  296.       for sending it.

  298.  1.27   Changes/Additions since 1.26:
  299.     - Added Happy New Year 96 linkvirus + 2 installers and three old
  300.       bootblock viruses called Asshole, RedGhost and Sao Paulo. Thanks

  320.  1.25   Changes/Additions since 1.24:
  321.     - Fixed menu colors for Kickstart V39+.
  322.     - Removed INFO option from the shell template.
  323.     - Added ARexx port! Finally VirusZ can be controlled from external
  324.       scripts or other programs. The first commands are HIDE and QUIT.
  325.     - Added CHECKFILE command to the ARexx port. Now you can check
  326.       single files from other programs like DOpus etc.
  327.     - Added ARexx command CHECKDIR to check a whole directory.
  328.     - Added scripts: CheckFile.vzrx, CheckDir.vzrx and CheckArc.vzrx.
  329.       These three show the whole power of VirusZ's Arexx port. You may
  330.       modify them for use with e.g. DOpus or other archive types.
  331.     - Extended shell template with FILECHECK, AREXX and QUIT commands.
  332.       These enable you to send ARexx commands from a shell environment
  333.       or from scripts directly to VirusZ. Returncodes represent the
  334.       results of the ARexx calls. If VirusZ is not running while using
  335.       one of the shell options, it will be first started and then the
  336.       commands will be transmitted to the ARexx port.
  337.     - Fixed string comparison in the ARexx code. Now it is no longer
  338.       case sensitive and thus will no longer make trouble with shell
  339.       options.
  340.     - Rebuilt and enhanced documentation. Now you can get some more
  341.       information about what VirusZ is doing in the background etc.
  342.     - Added ExAll() emulation to the file checker. There seems to be
  343.       a problem with some Kickstart versions using ExAll(). I've
  344.       written a replacement routine that can be turned on if required.
  345.       Thanks to Markus Schmall for telling me about the problem and
  346.       to the guys who told it to Markus.
  347.     - Added MultiCX 2.18 to vector check. Thanks Markus!
  348.     - Fixed all gadget sliders to Kickstart V39+ colors.
  349.     - Added Swifter 2.5 and SCSI-HD-Faker viruses. Thanks Markus!
  350.     - Added new behaviour to startup code: If there's already an old
  351.       version of VirusZ running, this one will be terminated and the
  352.       new version is started. This will only work with versions that
  353.       already have an ARexx port, so this is useful starting with the
  354.       next version of VirusZ. Thanks to Holger for the idea.
  355.     - Added 'Activate On Startup' option to the Misc settings. Now
  356.       you can tell VirusZ to activate the main window on startup.
  357.       Thanks to Axel Folley for that suggestion.
  358.     - Added 'Skip Crypted Files' option to file check settings.
  359.       This is useful if you have many password-protected files and
  360.       don't want to click on the 'Cancel' gadget a hundred times.
  361.       Idea by Axel Folley, thanks a lot.
  362.     - Fixed report output in file check: Now the escape sequences
  363.       are no longer starting with $9b, but with $1b,$5b. This makes
  364.       the output readable in editors like CygnusEd that support the
  365.       usual esc sequences. Thanks again to Axel Folley for the hint.
  366.     - Added Wireface Trojan 2 (CheckMount) virus. This nasty beast
  367.       was sent to me by Axel Folley. Thanks #4!!

  369.  1.24   Changes/Additions since 1.23:
  370.     - Oops! Little bug fix in the file check. This one must have been
  371.       in VirusZ for at least 2 years and nobody (including myself)
  372.       noticed it. Whenever VirusZ came across 9 or more subdirectories,
  373.       the display went crazy because of a counter underflow in the
  374.       screen output routine. Special thanks to Cameron Weeks, Rudolph
  375.       Riedel and Axel Folley for the detailed report. Isn't it funny
  376.       that nobody noticed that bug for years and now you guys found it
  377.       all within two weeks??
  378.     - Added support for SetMan, PatchControl and patch.library to the
  379.       vector check. All patches that have been SetFunction()ed with
  380.       one of these programs running caused VirusZ to display them as
  381.       unknown even if they were already built in.
  382.       Thanks to Rudolph Riedel for sending me the programs.
  383.     - Added recognition for EasyReqPatch, ModePro, PatchAllocMem,
  384.       ReqChange, TimedRequesters and MultiCX to the vector check.

  386.     - Added Ebola and Cryptic Essence linkviruses.
  387.       Thanks to Markus Schmall for sending them.
  388.     - Added support for FD files to the vector check. Now you are
  389.       able to see the function names of unknown vectors instead of
  390.       their offsets.
  391.     - Uh! Last minute fix in the FD file support. Standard functions
  392.       (-6 to [-24/-36]) have not been displayed correctly.
  393.     - Totally overworked file check routines. 4EB9-linked files will
  394.       be unlinked, decrunched and checked now. Nested 4EB9-links in
  395.       one file are handled all during one check via recursive calls
  396.       to the check routine. This stuff took me two full days as
  397.       I had to localize all global structures in the check routines!
  398.     - Totally overworked internal file- and linkvirus brains to
  399.       support 4EB9-viruses directly. And another weekend is gone!
  400.       Attention: VirusZ will detect some built-in viruses ONLY if the
  401.       decrunch option is enabled. Sorry, but that's the drawback with
  402.       recursive checking.
  403.     - Splitted docs in three parts: English, Deutsch and history.
  404.       Cut pre-VirusZ II entries from the history to shorten docs back
  405.       to a sensible size. Updated guides with new features.
  406.     - Fixed another little problem with FD files in the vector check.
  407.       Some devices (e.g. trackdisk) don't have a FD file because they
  408.       don't offer additional functions. In that case the standard
  409.       functions (-6 to -36) have not been displayed by name.
  410.     - Added new powerful version of xfdmaster.library.
  411.     - Removed old icons and added MagicWB icons by Martin Huttenloher
  412.       and Timm S. Müller. Thanks for the great work guys!

  414.  1.23   Changes/Additions since 1.22:
  415.     - Oops! Illegal Access also has a method to link itself to
  416.       libraries/devices/datatypes etc. which I've totally forgotten

  434.       I've overseen the fact that the encryption may have two
  435.       different branch offsets. Sorry folks, now it's 100% safe!
  436.     - Optimized hunk handling in the linkvirus removal routines
  437.       and saved about 400 bytes of code.
  438.     - Finally fixed one BIG problem of the file checker:
  439.       Whenever there was a write access (deleting/removing virus),
  440.       it may have happened that some files were overseen or
  441.       checked twice because the filesystem exchanges some file
  442.       headers on disk on every write access. This was especially
  443.       nasty concerning RAM:, because that handler is not block
  444.       oriented. That problems are history!!
  445.       I've rewritten the whole directory scan routine using ExAll()
  446.       instead of Examine()/ExNext(). Now not only the above mentioned
  447.       problems are fixed, but the code is even shorter and faster
  448.       than before. Nested directories are now handled via recursive
  449.       calls to the scan routine!
